Best Advice for Professors Teaching an Undergraduate Course
Syllabus
If you use a syllabus for your course, keep it short and to the point. No student appreciates thumbing through 50 pages of ramblings. Keep in mind that college students possess the ability to read. Do not stand in front of the class and read your syllabus verbatim; stick to the key points. At a minimum, include assignment due dates, exam days and times, and your contact information in your syllabus.
Grades
Grade assignments and exams quickly. Teachers who do not return grades in a timely manner are not counted among the favorite professors. Students work hard on their assignments and put in long hours studying for exams; tell your students how they scored as soon as possible. Student motivation quickly diminishes when progress is unknown.
Communication
Tell your students how you prefer to communicate. Communication typically occurs in one of several ways: face-to-face in the classroom, during office hours, via email, through a messaging service, via text or over the phone. Do not make your students question how to contact you. Tell students how long you plan to write my essay cheap and stick to that time frame.
Instruction
It is important to remember that each student is an individual learner. Some students learn best when given direct instruction and some need to get their hands dirty. Alter your instruction delivery in order to reach each student in your class. If you are teaching in an online environment, use text, videos and audio in combination. The more varied your instruction, the more engaged your students are.
Class Cancellation
When you find it necessary to cancel class, do so in a timely manner. Remember that not every student lives on campus. Set a policy for canceling class. Alert your students the evening before class is to be held or, at the latest, first thing in the morning.
